The German Group expands its presence in aluminium extrusion and steel and non-ferrous metal forging technologies
The news of the day is about an important new acquisition regarding aluminium plant manufacturers in Italy. The German giant SMS has completed the complex purchase operation of two important companies in the Italian aluminium industry: Omav based in Rodengo Saiano and Hydromec based in Gussago. An operation estimated at over 50 million euros and completed by the Group’s Italian subsidiary, SMS Group Spa. With over 13,700 employees and a turnover of around three billion euros, SMS completes its production range with this operation. The German Group can now count on an advanced production pole in the sector of plants for aluminium extrusion presses and hot forging of brass, steel and aluminium. The turnover generated by the synergy of the two Italian companies currently exceeds one hundred million euros and now has 245 employees. The two companies will continue to operate under the current brands in the future.
Massimo Marinelli, Managing Director of Omav and newly appointed director of Hydromec, says: “Omav and Hydromec contribute considerable know-how to the SMS Group. Together we have become even more efficient for customers all over the world. All components of our turnkey press systems integrate optimally with each other and work very efficiently thanks to innovative automation and digitisation solutions”. Omav, based in Rodengo Saiano, was founded in 1952 and can undoubtedly claim a great reputation in the field of plant engineering for aluminium extrusion plants worldwide. The cooperation with SMS started in 2011 with a partnership in the supply of complete plants and was strengthened in 2017 with an initial acquisition of 25% of Omav’s shares by the German giant. Omav at the end of September, after the transaction, subsequently acquired 70% of Hydromec, based in Gussago. Founded in 1980, Hydromec is specialized in the construction of presses for forging and ring rolling for hot forming of brass, aluminium and steel. Thomas Winterfeldt, Business Area Manager Forging Technology of SMS, welcomed all the employees of the two companies: “The mutual technology transfer, efficient use of globally well-placed capacities and the strong distribution network of SMS group will increase our competitiveness. Our customers will benefit not only from the joint portfolio of existing products but also from the innovations, developments and worldwide service of SMS group”.
